Solutions Flashcards
What is the solute?
The substance that dissolves in the solvent is called the solute.
What is a solution?
A mixture of a solute and a solvent e.g. Copper sulfate solution.
What is the difference between melting and dissolving?
Dissolving involves two substances (a solute and a solvent) however melting only requires one substance.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution in which there is a small amount of solute and a large amount of solvent.
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution in which there is a large amount of solute and a small amount of solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution that contains as much dissolved solute as possible at a given temperature.
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution that has not dissolved the maximum solute at a given temperature.
What is solubility?
The mass of a substance (in grams) that will dissolve in 100g f solvent at a fixed temperature.
What is a solubility curve?
Graph showing how the solubility of a substance varies with temperature.
What is crystallisation?
The formation of crystals when a hot saturated solution is cooled or when the solvent is allowed to evaporate from the solution.
What is a suspension?
When a solid is added to a liquid and become scattered throughout the liquid. This is called a suspension e.g. Muddy water & milk.
What is a solvent?
A substance that dissolves other materials to form a solution.
