Materials, Elements, Compounds And mixtures Flashcards
Can i name the three states of matter?
Solids, liquids, gases
Can i define matter?
Matter is anything which occupies space and which has mass
Can i describe an experiment to show that gas has mass?
1) place a deflated balloon on a balance
2) write down the mass of the balloon
3) inflate the balloon by blowing into it and tie a knot
4) write down the new mass of the balloon
Can i describe an experiment to show that gas has a volume?
1) place a gas jar and a beehive shell filled with water in a bowk filled with water
2) connect a length of clean rubber and take a deep breath and blow gently into the water
3) watch the bubbles of gas in the water
Can i list three proprieties of a solid?
✔️Definite shape
✔️definite volume
✔️do not flow
Can i explain the arrangement of particles in a solid?
✔️arranged in a regular way
✔️ cannot move out of position
✔️ particles are packed closely together
✔️strong forces holding the particles together.
Can i list three proprieties of a liquid?
✔️No definite shape
✔️definite volume
✔️flow and evaporate
Can i explain the arrangement of particles in a liquid?
✔️no regular arrangement
✔️the liquid has no definite shape of its own
✔️can slide
✔️particles are weaker than in a solid
Can i explain the particles in a gas
✔️particles are much further apart than in a liquid or a solid
✔️Particles can move quickly into all space available
✔️There are only very weak forces between the particles.
Can i distinguish between melting and freezing?
The melting point is a high temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid. The freezing point is a low temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid.
Can i distinguish between boiling and condensing?
Boiling is changing a liquid to a gas. Condensing is changing a gas to a liquid.
Can i define and explain evaporation?
Evaporation is the changing of an liquid to a gas
Do I know the boiling point of water?
100*C
Do i know the boiling point of alcohol?
78.37*C
Can i define Element?
An element is a substance that cannot be split up into simpler substances by chemical means
Can i define compound?
A compound is a substance that is made up of two or more elements combined together chemically
Can i define molecule?
A group of atoms bonded together representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can tale part in a chemical reaction
Can i define mixture?
A mixture consists of two or more different substances mingled with each other but not chemically combined
Can i give four differences between a compound and a mixture?
1) the amounts of the substances can vary in the mixture but not in the compound
2) a mixture contains two or more substances, a compound is a sing,e substance
3) there are practically no energy changes when a mixture is made, heat is usually taken out or given in when a compound is formed
4) mixtures can be separated back into single elements but compounds cant
Can i describe an experiment to compare a mixture of iron and sulfur and iron sulfide?
1) mix together iron filings and some sulfur to make a compound
2) using a magnet separate out the iron filings and the sulfur again ( the iron filings will stick to the magnet)
3) now mix the substances together again
4) heat the substance to make a compound using a bunsen burner and a test tube
5) a compound has been made compared to the mixture
6) note how using a magnet you can no longer separate out the iron filings
Can i list the first twenty elements?

2) helium
3) lithium
4) beryllium
5) boron
