Cells Flashcards
What is the cell membrane?
The cell membrane is the skin that protects the cell. It controls what can enter and leave the cell
What is a cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is the watery substance present in all cells. All chemical reactions necessary for life take place here
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus acts as the control centre of the cell. It contains the DNA. The DNA forms a set of instructions to how the cell will work
What are the three structures only present in plant cells?
The cell wall
The chloroplast
Large vacuoles
What is the cell wall?
A cell wall is a structure only present in plant cells. It surrounds the cell and gives it shape and support
What is the chloroplast?
The chloroplast is a structure only present in plant cells. It holds the chlorophyll, the green colour that plants use to make food
What is the vacuole?
Plant cells have large vacuoles. These are the place in the cytoplasm which store things and give support.
On what scale does the eyepiece lens magnify the object on the light microscope?
Usually ✖️10
What is the eyepiece lens on the light microscope used for?
Magnifying the object
What is the nosepiece?
The nosepiece is the part of the microscope that holds the objective lens.
What are the objective lenses?
They magnify the object by ✖️4, ✖️10, ✖️40
What does the rough focus wheel do?
Brings the object into ‘rough’ focus
What does the fine focus wheel do?
Brings the object in ‘sharp’ focus
What is the stage on the light microscope used for?
Holding the slide
What is the mirror/light source on the microscope used for?
The source of light
Who was the inventor of the light microscope?
Anton van Leeuwenhock
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells with the same function working together
Give an example of an animal tissue?
A muscle
What is an organ?
An organ is made of many different tissues working together
Give an example of a animal organ?
The heart
What is a system?
A system is a group of organs working together
Give an example of an animal system?
The digestive system
What does growth result from?
Cell division
What are all living things made up of?
Cells
Are organisms made up of one cell or thousands?
Some are made up of one(bacteria) and others are made up of thousands
What is used to stain plant cells?
Iodine stain
Are cells all the same size?
No! Cells differ in size, shape and function

1) cell membrane
2) cytoplasm
3) nucleus
