Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Give 3 examples of filtration.
Surgical masks, coffee filters, oil and air filters.
What is filtration?
A method of separating an insoluble solid form a liquid using a material that allows the liquid to pass through but not the solid.
What is evaporation?
The changing from a liquid to a gas.
What is simple distillation?
It’s used to to separate a liquid and a soluble solid when the liquid is required e.g. Pure water from sea water
What is paper chromatography?
It is used to separate mixtures of substances in a solution. The solvent in which the substances is dissolved is passed through a length of paper. The dissolved substances separate out on to the paper.
What is a mixture?
A mixture consists of two or more different substances mingled with each other but not chemically combined.
What is the filtrate?
The clear liquid that passes through the filter paper.
What is the residue?
The solid remaining on the filter paper.
What is condensing?
Condensing is cooling a vapour back into a liquid.
What is the distillate?
Pure water with no substances dissolved in it left over after distillation.
What is a soluble substance?
A substance that dissolves in water.
What is an insoluble substance?
A substance that doesn’t dissolve in water.
What is a pure substance?
A substance that contains only a single substance and no impurities.
