Energy Flashcards
What is the measurement for energy?
Joules (symbol: J)
What is the definition for energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or move something
Can i state the law of conservation for energy?
Energy can neither be created or destroyed but but it can change from one form to another
Can i give 9 examples of different forms of energy?
- Fossil fuels
- Solar energy
- Wind energy
- Tidal energy
- Hydroelectric energy
- Wave energy
- Biomass energy
- Geothermal energy
- Nuclear energy
What is a non-renewable form of energy?
Non- renewable sources get used up i.e fossil fuels
Do i know the unit for work?
Joules (symbol: J)
Can i give examples of stored energy?
- potential energy
- nuclear energy
- chemical energy
Can i give six examples of energy in action?
- electrical
- magnetic
- kinetic
- heat
- light
- sound
Can i give two advantages of fossil fuels?
- electricity supply is guaranteed (once fuel is there)
- fuel can be stored, extra demand can be catered for
- relatively cheap
Can i give two disadvantages of fossil fuels?
- limited supply available
- will get more expensive as supplies dwindle
- it pollutes the air, produces acid rain and increases the greenhouse effect
Can i give two advantages of solar energy?
- Free supply will never run out
- no pollution
- solar panels or cells on roof do not interfere with anything
Can i give two disadvantages of solar energy?
- initial costs can be very high
- least/no energy at night and in winter when its most needed
- solar energy is spread over a wide area and is difficult to collect
Can i give two advantages of wind energy?
- free supply will never run out
- no pollution. Land with wind turbines can still be used for farming
- low level technology costs about 1/5 of what it cost 20 years ago
Can i give two disadvantages of wind energy?
- some people thing wind turbines are noisy and unsightly
- many turbines are needed produce as much electricity as one modern power station
- windy sights are essential, the supply is variable and unreliable
Can i give two advantages of hydroelectric energy?
- Free supply will never run out
- no pollution and can store energy from other sources
- can be switched on in a matter of seconds
