What is sold-medrol?
steroid hormone (corticosteroid) found in almost every cell, related to glucose metabolism (adrenal glucocorticoid) `
What is the Moa of solumedrol ?
suppresses immune response
dilutes smooth muscle by stimulating beta receptors
why give soul-medrol?
bronchospasm
Copd/asthma
allergic reaction
why NOT give it?
premature infants
systemic fungal infections
caution with GI bleeds
What side effects would you warn the patient about?
headache, restlessness, depression
ulcer formation, hypernatremia ( too much sodium in the body)
hypokalemia ( low potassium level)
elevated BGL
What if I mix it with other drugs?
may lower effect of insulin/glucose lowering agents
DOSE of solu-medrol
adult & pediatric… 1-2mg/kg IV
up to 2mg/kg/dose for status asthmatics/anaphylaxis
Max dose- 60 mg/24 hrs
Pregnancy category
C (crosses placenta barrier- may cause harm) weigh benefits vs risks
NOTE
reduces inflammation , thus a patient may not present with signs of sepsis/infection
