Albuterol
(what’s another name?)
What does it do?
Dose?
(Proventil, Ventolin)
imitates the sympathetic nervous system (sympathomimetic)
opens up bronchioles (bronchodilator)
DOSE:
A- 2.5mg/2.5ml
P- (under 20 kg) 1.25mg/dose
How does albuterol bronchodilate?
It stimulates the beta-2 receptors and auses the bronchioles to open up
Why would you give albuterol ?
bronchospasms
Copd/Asthma ( to open up the bronchioles)
Croup
Laryngeal edema
Why would you NOT give albuterol?
Hypersensitivity
tachycardia
dysrhythmias
Consider effects when given with similar drugs
Side effects of albuterol?
May feel jittery light headed tachycardia irritable restless
What if I mix albuterol with other drugs?
If I mix it with beta blockers- Antagonist (it may not work)
can potentiate hyperkalemia ( high potassium)
Pregnancy category for albuterol?
C (give if benefits outweigh potential harm)
