Solids, Solution And Sizes Flashcards
What are the two states of matter in solids?
Crystalline
Amorphous
What are the different crystalline matters?
Polymorphs ( different types of arrangements)
Solvates+ Hydrates
Co-crystals ( 2different molecules that come together)
What structure do amorphous matter have?
No structure to any molecules.
What is the definition of solution?
Mixture of two or more components that form a single phase is homogeneous to the molecular level.
What is the definition of solvent?
The component which determines the phase.
What is the definition of solute?
The other components which are dispersed as molecules or ion throughout the solvent.
What is the definition of dissolution?
The process whereby molecules or ions from the solid phase into solution.
When is equilibrium reached?
When there is no more solute that can dissolve.
‘’Saturated solution”
What is the difference between solution and suspension?
Solution is a single phase
Suspension is a two-phase
3 Types of solution
Solid in liquid
Liquid in liquid
Gas in liquid
2 types of solid in liquid
Solution of non-electrolytes (non-ionic)
Solution of electrolytes (forms ions in solution)
2 types of liquid in liquid solutions
Completely miscible
Partially miscible
How is the structure of gas in liquid determined?
By temperature and pressure.
What is the definition of miscibility?
Mutual solubility of components in liquid-liquid systems.
what is the triple point?
the temperature and pressure where the 3 phases exist together
