Physical Properties, Analytical Chemistry, Purity Determination And Compounds Seperation Flashcards
What are the main types of properties of a drug molecule?
Physical property
Chemical property
Intermolecular forces
Melting point
Boiling point
Hydrophobicity/ Lipophilicity or hydrophilicity/ lipophobicity
Polarity
Solubility
What is physical property?
Characteristic of matter that can be measured or observed without a change in its chemical composition
How do you measure chemical property?
Can be measured by changing the chemical composition of a substance
What are some physical states?
Amorphous solid
Crystalline solid
Hygroscopic solid
Liquid
Gas
What are the three types of intermolecular forces?
Dipole dipole interactions
Van der waals forces
Hydrogen bonding
What are dipole dipole interactions?
Interactions between the positive end of one dipole and the negative end of another dipole
What are van der waals forces?
Relative,y weak forces that exist between non polar molecules
What is hydrogen bonding?
Attractive forces between H attached to an electronegative atom of one molecule and an electronegative atom of the same or different molecule
What is melting point?
Temperature at which solid becomes a liquid
What is boiling point?
Temperature at which a substance can change its state from a liquid to a gas at a given pressure
What is hydrophilicity or lipophobicity?
Ability of a chemical compound or drug to go into solution in H2O and polar solvents and have ‘fear of fats’
What is hydrophobicity or lipophilicity?
Ability of a chemical compound or drug to go into solutions in lipids and non polar solvents
How is polarity of a molecule indicated?
By the molecular dipole moment of the entire molecule
How is solubility measured?
Amount of a solute that can be dissolved in a specific solvent under given conditions
What is the partition coefficient?
Substance added to a pair of immiscible solvent distributes itself between the two solvents according to its affinity for each phase (solvent)
