soil (part 3) Flashcards
what has led to valuable mineral deposits and provided materials for sedimentary rocks
weathering
soil is made up of what
loose weathered rock and organic material
how does soil form (only 1 step)
when its parent material is weathered
side profile
a cross section of the earth
how many layers do mature soils at least have to have
3 layers
describe each horizon (subsoil, topsoil, organic, weathered parent rock)
o horizon - organic
a horizon - topsoil
b horizon - subsoil
c horizon - weathered parent rock
residual soil (parent material)
bedrock beneath soil which has not been moved
transported soil
soil formed from parent material left by winds, rivers, glaciers or any soil that was moved (transported soil from erosion and deposition)
o horizons description
color is black and is known for the organic matter humus that decays and decompose plants
a horizon description
color is dark brown and the layer contains humus mixed with mineral matter
b horizon description
color is reddish brown and has a mixture of sediments, clay, silt, and sand
c horizon description
light brown/tan, slightly weathered parent rock
