SOG Section 13 - Driving Flashcards
Which lane is to be used and when?
Left lane, when responding to and returning from calls and conducting driver training
What considerations should be taken in icy/slippery road conditions?
Jake brake on low or off
What must occur when crossing on a red signal or stop sign?
Come to complete stop
Establish eye contact with other drivers
Wait for Captain to communicate way is clear
Wait 2 seconds, then proceed with caution
When should Captain be involved with driving?
To establish that way is clear when proceeding through red/stop sign and turning in front of stopped vehicles
Which apparatus should be used as a blocker truck at an MVC?
First arriving should be placed in such a manner as to provide a safe working zone, considering an extra lane be blocked where possible
What is the distances to use when setting blocker vehicles?
30m plus 4 metres for every 10km/h of posted speed. Expand this zone when inclement conditions are present
When should police be notified for traffic control?
When there is encroachment into a live lane of traffic
What should a Captain ensure his crew wears at MVC scenes?

What distance buffer should be used with cones and live traffic?
0.5 metres
What is the maximum cone spacing?
3 metres
How many lanes should be allowed for same-direction vehicle traffic
1 lane maximum where possible
What steps should be taken if train tracks are involved in an MVC?
Contact fire control and have them advise to shut down train traffic until issue is resolved. Apparatus is never to be parked on tracks
When dealing with high speed roadways, how should blocker vehicles be positioned?
Protecting one extra lane than affected by collision. Lane+1 blocking
When should cones be deployed on 90km/h+ roadways?
Never, unless traffic speed has slowed, extra channeling is required or IC says so
What are the considerations for Aerial placement?
Required operations Placement near structure corner Overhead obstructions Outrigger space Exclusion zones Level and stable when possible. When not, work off high side Asphalt condition causing instability (hot, soft) Soft earth/erosion from hydrants or rain Frozen ground thawing from apparatus heat Retaining wall height Open construction Underground parking Underground drains/sewers Manholes Curbs
Who can deem whether an elevated device is to be manned or unmanned?
IC or sector officer
What should the safe working distance be between aerial ops and personnel?
10 metres
What considerations should be given prior to deploying an elevated stream INTO a building?

What speed winds stops aerial operations?
55 km/h
How much pressure on an aerial ladder after bedding?
1000-1200 psi
What are the Captain’s duties for Apparatus, Equipment and station inspections?

Ensure their section of Daily report, section B, is completed ASAP
Ensure all personnel complete their inspection reports
Ensure Defective/Missing form is completed when required via Sharepoint
Ensure apparatus inspected as per Apparatus Inspection Schedule
