Soft Tissue Mobilizations (Exam 2) Flashcards
Is a type of manual therapy or hands on physical therapy.
Mobilization
Deals with the manipulation of soft tissue, capsuling a joint called fascia, and muscles over joints that have restricted range of motion.
Mobilization
Indications Soft Tissue Mobilization
Relief of pain, relaxation of muscles, improves circulation, reduce edema, stretch or break up adhesions, produce therapeutic effects on respiratory system.
Contraindications Soft Tissue Mobilization
Over open wound, skin abnormalities, acute inflammation, high fever, TB lesions, blood vessel disroders, tumors, acute hematoma, non-union fractures, post-op tendon transplant or repair, edema secondary to kidney or cadiac dysfunction, treatment increases pain, undiagnosed patients.
Precautions Soft Tissue Mobilization
Varicous veins, hemophilia, gross edema.
A series of techniques designed to release restrictions in the myofascial tissue that are used for the treatment of soft tissue dysfunction that has not responded to other interventions.
Myofascial Release
Reduced inflammation, reduced muscle and nerve pain, decreased fascial tension beneath scar tissue, relief of pain not achieved through conventional therapies, soft tissue mobilization loosening constricted connective tissues and freeing impinged structures of the muscular and nervous systems .
Indications Myofacial Release
16% of total weight
25% of total water content
Fascia and Connective Tissue
A measurement of the rate of deformation of any material under load. The capability possessed by a solid of yielding continually under stress.
Viscosity
The ability of a strained body or tissue to recover its shape after deformation.
Elasticity
The ability to retain a shape attained by deformation
Plasticity
Going into the resistrictive barrier.
Bind
Going away from restrictive barrier.
Ease
Involve a gentle, and simple indirect manipulative approach for the treatment of somatic dysfunction, using the passive positioning of the body in a position of ease (rather than into the motion restriction) to evoke a therapeutic effect.
Strain-Counterstain
Can be used to mobilize joints, strengthen weakened muscles, and to stretch adaptively shortened muscles and fascia.
Muscle Energy
Patient voluntarily moves the body as specifically directed by the therapist/assistant. This directed patient action is from a precisely controlled position against a defined resistance by the practitioner.
Muscle Energy
Involves the application of manual pressure over the body’s acupuncture points to improve the flow of the body’s Energy.
Acupressure
A technique devised by Cyriax whereby repeated cross-grain massage is applied to muscle, tendons, tendon sheaths, and ligaments.
Transverse Friction Massage
Contraindicated for acute inflammation, hematomas, debilitated or open skin, peripheral nerves, and with patients who have diminished sensation in the area. 3-5 Minutes.
Transverse Friction Massage
A system of diagnosis and treatment by an osteopathic practitioner using the primary respiratory mechanism and balanced membranous tension.
Craniosacral Therapy
CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
