what is social stratification?
division of a large group or society which is ranked into categories of people. Each level has access to different scarce and valued resources like property, power and prestige.
Give examples of the social stratification amongst the population.

- Cars, soccer, football, b-ball, public/private school (partially subsidized).

A person achieves a certain status and they tend to change and be more flexible. Ex: educational achievement, reputation, becoming a mom/dad, criminal record.

explain the upper elite class.
- A very small class that holds significant wealth
- Posses most of the country’s “old money” but also includes “new rich”
- Access to the three components of wealth: prestige, property, power

- people with high school diplomas and lesser levels of education
- manual labor jobs (blue collar)
- paid on hourly basis and lack formal education

what is horizontal mobility?
moving within the same status category
what is vertical mobility?
moving from one social class to another. (can be up or down)
what is intragenerational mobility? and give an example
when individual changes social standing, especially in the work force. In one specific generation. ex: difference between siblings (one is a doctor and the other is a garbage man).
what is intergenerational mobility? and give an example.
change that families make from one social class to the next through generations, ex: differences between generations (grandparents came as immigrants with nothing and through generations family moved up in the social class)
What are the 7 factors of who’s likely to become or stay poor?
- gender: women earn less.
- Age: teens/early 20’s bcs it takes time to earn a good wage.
- family structure: lone-mother headed families (2nd highest poverty rate)
- education: more educating you have, the less likely you will be poor.
- minority status: big wage-gap btw white and black people
- work status: partime/seasonal worker don’t have big salaries.
- locations: urban/city people have more opportunities than rural regions
why do couples with kids make more money than without?
- two salaries
- They are usually people who are older
Consider what theory talks the amazon video. what can they criticize?
The conflict theory supports the main message of this film because they are talking about social class inequality and how the only people who are benefitted are the company owners while the workers are paid small wages and are exploited.
