Sociologogy of health part 2 Flashcards
What Microlevel approach things must be considered with chronic conditions?
- Biographical Disruptions
eg
- Disruption of daily activities
- Self identity
- Shame and blame ( eg weight and diabetes)
What does Biological Disruptions mean ?
When diagnosed with a long-term condition such as
T2DM, many people experience significant hiatus in their lives that
can impact on both their physical and emotional well-being.
This is known as ‘biographical disruption’
in which their diagnosis disrupts an individual’s expectations and plans about their future and self-concept.This intrusion can alter one’s identity and self-worth, leading to a sense of ‘loss of self’.
What is stigma and how does it relate to chronic illness ?
Enacted stigma – discrimination against people on the grounds of their perceived inferiority.
Felt stigma – feeling of shame associated with fear of enacted stigma.
NB: stigma is a social concept – not about the individual but tied to social norms, values and beliefs.
We might consider how social changes affect what is stigmatised.
Corbin and Strauss (1985) analyse chronic illness in terms of 3 types of work
What are they ?
What may be the impact of treatment regimes ?
