Idea that sexual behaviour is scripted. A result of elaborate prior learning that teaches us an etiquette.

- Every society regulates the sexuality of its members
- The appropriateness or inappropriateness of particular sexual behaviour depends on institutional context in which they occur
- basic institutions of society affect the rules governing sexuality in that society.
