Gender dysphoria Flashcards
Gender dysphoria diagnostics
Strong desire to be treated as, or have primary/secondary sex charactertics of other gender
Historically seen as incongruence/dissatisfaction in binary understanding. Clinical scales don’t capture the dysphoria bc its not diverse enough, especially for nonbinary people
Nonbinary experience
Not always dysphoria, a lot are comfortable in their skin
Naming aspects of their body is often their form of dysphoria, in terms of shape, function or feeling
Gender dysphoria
psychological distress about a mismatch between one’s gender and gender identity
Discrimination toward trans people
- Micro-aggression (eg denial of gender)
- Restrictions in career (denied employment)
- Maltreatment in health care (having to educate staff)
- Harassment by law enforcement (Unfairly questioned)
- Bullying (teachers refusing to stop abuse)
Social transition
Children are called by preferred pronouns and dress how they want, but no hormonal/surgical treatment.
These score same on mental health measures as cis children
If not allowed, score poorly
