5 challenges article Flashcards
Biological dimorphism
idea that sex is dimorphic system and outcome is based on which of the two sexes you belong to. in reality, its a mosaic of female- and male-typical features
Hormones
Idea that there are ‘female’ and ‘male’ hormones, even though we all have them. also assumed that the levels of these hormones are genetically determined. In reality; levels are dynamic and can be influenced by social processes
Psychological differences
Assumed to be very large but in reality not the case. again mostly gender mosaic
Trans/non-binary
Implicit assumption that everyone accepts the label they receive at birth (male/female). Self-labeled gender and gender roles are necessary to understand how individuals process socialisations
Development
Societal practicals contribute to tendencies of children to categorise themselves as either male/female.
Howsepian’s comment
- sex is distinguished between 2 for reproductive reasons. Adding more doesn’t add
- Gender identity is not biological factor, only influenced by it. Heavily socially/psychologically influenced terms.
- Human body doesn’t reflect sexual mosaicism. Genes differ greatly even if trait are in common
- Sex based gene differences largely explain disease development and processes.
Claim: Important to make distinction between sex and gender to prevent ham
Reilly’s comment
- Masculinity and femininity are not mutually exclusive traits but distinct constructs.
- More valid/new instrument should be used to measure (BSRI or PAQ)
- Treating gender as continuous holds promise for the future of psychological research in range of areas.
