describing a ruler or government with absolute power, even over life and death
What does cosmopolitan mean?
worldly, global, not bound by one’s culture
During the Tang dynasty how did China change?
It became cosmopolitan and the envy of the world
What is a tributary state?
a country force to make regular payments to a more powerful country in exchange for peace and protection
What is polo?
A game played by two teams on horseback
How did the Tang dynasty show its’ power?
They forced many countries, Vietnam, Korea, Tibet to pay them fees so that the Tang would not attack
How did the Tang dynasty improve people’s wealth?
They took the land from the landowners and gave it to the ordinary people so they could pay taxes.
What type of public construction did the Tang do?
They built roads and canals
How did the Tang dynasty’s world view change?
They started to notice the world and allowed different cultures into their capital city.
What benefit did the Tang dynasty’s open world view have?
They started to trade a lot more around the world.
How did being open to the world change China’s culture?
They adopted other fashions in clothes and hairstyles, played foreign games like polo
Why were merchants not valued or respected in Tang dynasty?
Because of Confucian ideas where wealth is bad making money vs growing food or making goods
