What is reason?
Reason is the ability to think and draw conclusions.
What is a city state?
A city state is a politically independent city and the rural area around it. City states have their own government and army
What happened in Italy during the Middle Ages?
Italy developed into a series of city states during the Middle Ages.
What happened to cities that were close to harbours?
Because they were closer to harbors the cities became large and powerful centers of trade.
What were the two largest city states in Italy?
Genoa and Venice were the largest city states.
How did mountains affect Italy?
Mountains made it difficult to travel and to communicate.
How did Roman roads help development in Italy?
The good roads helped cities such as Siena and Assisi on those routes become trade centers
What was special about Florence?
Florence was the hub of a major trade route, and became the regions most powerful city.
How did climate help Italy?
Italy has nice mild weather, so in winter travel was not disrupted by bad weather. It has a long gowing season, and grew grapes for wine and oilves for oil
How did Italy’s location help it?
Being close to African ports across the Mediterranean Sea, so trade was easy and cheap. It made the Middle Eastern science more accessible. It gave them lemons, oranges, coffee and sugar.
How did Italy’s history help it?
It was the site of two past civilizations: Greek and Roman, so their artistic, philosophic, political thinkers influenced Italy.
What did Renaissance artists and thinkers want to do with history?
They wanted to revive and renew the old historical traditions.
How did Medieval paintings differ from Roman and Greek paintings?
Roman and Greek paintings celebrated beauty but Medieval paintings told religious stories.
What inspired Renaissance artists?
Romand and Greek ruins, sculptures, wall paintings that they saw all around them.
How did people’s reading change in the Renaissance?
Past writings were viewed through a religious perspective during the Middle Ages, but in the Renaissance people read classical writings in a more analytical way.
