Personality
The aspects of character that makeup oneself
Role Taking
When children attach to societal roles, and mock practicing them, based on what they have observed
Harlow’s Monkeys Experiment
An experiment that proved that nurture and care are just as important to the development of youth as need of resources like food and shelter
Self-Concept
The way an individual views themselves in the context of society (as well as how they view their character)
Looking-Glass Self
The process in which someone bases their sense of self on the way they think society (or a specific people group) views them
Hidden Curriculum
The concepts that schools work into their lessons that are overarching concepts of life, like problem solving, confidence, or teamwork
Total Institution
A place where a group of people are cut off from society, and are molded to fit the new isolated environment (such as prison)
Desocialization
The process in which individuals are stripped away of the ways of their previous society as they are isolated or disconnected from said original society
Resocialization
The process after Desocialization that teaches the now ‘blank slates’ the way of their new society
Anticipatory Socialization
The process in which outsiders of a people group slowly take up the values of the group in order to ease their entrance into said people group
Mead’s Stages of Development
The stages in which youth are socialized (Imitation, Game, Play)
“I” versus “Me”
“I” is the response that an individual has towards the attitudes of others, and the “me” is the organised views of the attitudes of others
