Symbols
An object, idea, drawing, sign, stereotype, or deity that holds significance in a culture’s society
Norms
What is expected/accepted by a society
Folkways
The ideas that are considered ‘rude’ versus ‘polite/accepted’–not legally punishable but can result in alienation or social dissaproval
Mores
The ideas that are considered ‘right’ versus ‘wrong’–are legally enforceable and can result in stigma and prison time
Ideal Culture
A culture that includes all of the values, beliefs, and norms that society aspires to achieve
Real Culture
The actual values, beliefs, and norms that a society has (based on reality and not aspiration)
Counterculture
When a group breaks away from the norms and creates an offshoot of their own culture that rubs against the norms of the main society
Subculture
Groups that are of their own culture, that separate a greater society by interests, norms, identities, etc
Values
What a culture priorities morally
Sociobiology
The study of (or reference to) the biological basis of social behavior
Cultural Universals
Ideas that are excepted widely through a culture, and are agreed apon by subcultures as well
Rites of Passage
An action that someone can take to move up to a new social status, typically a pressured norm
Material Culture
Basing societal worth or status on physcial objects or things that you can obtain physically
Non-material Culture
The parts of society that place worth on things that are not physically tangible
