Socialization
The process of social influence through which a person acquires the culture or subculture of their group, and in the course of acquiring these cultural elements the individual’s self and personality are shaped

The individual person, from his or her own perspective
Looking-glass self
The process wherein individuals base their sense of self on how they believe others view them
Taking the role of the other
Putting yourself in another person’s place to think/reflect about yourself
Significant other
Any person or persons with a strong influence on an individual’s self-concept
Generalized other
The ability to understand and take into account the attitudes and viewpoints of those in our society, as well as our expected roles within society
Id
the basic instinctual drives that are present at birth, inherent in the somatic organization, and governed only by the pleasure principle
Ego
The part of a person’s personality that is controlled by the reality principle as it mediates between a person’s animalistic desires and conscience
Superego
The ethical component of the personality and provides the moral standards by which the ego operates
Gender
The characteristics or women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed
Gender socialization
The process of teaching member of society how to behave according to gender expectations, or gender roles
Peer group
A social group and a primary group of people who have similar interests, age, background, or social status
Mass media
Large-scale organizations which use one or more of these technologies to communicate with large numbers of people
Social inequality
the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society
Agents of socialization
A combination of social groups and social institutions that provide the first experiences of socialization
Manifest functions
The recognized and intended consequences of any social pattern
Latent functions
An unintended consequence or outcome of an activity or social system
Anticipatory socialization
The way in which a person begins to think and behave in anticipation or joining a new social group
Resocialization
Undergoing this process again by drastically changing one’s values and beliefs
Total institutions
A place of work and residence where a great number of similarly situated people, cut off from the wider community for a considerable time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round or life
Degradation ceremony
The process of transforming one’s total identify to an identity that is lower in status and ejecting the individual from the group
Life course
A sequence of socially defined events and roles that the individuals enact over time
Transitional adulthood
A period following high school when young adults have not yet taken on the responsibilities ordinarily associated with adulthood
Transitional older years
Age-related transition points that require socialization into a new role, such as becoming school age entering the workforce, or retiring
