Social stratification
A society’s categorization of its people into rankings of socioeconomic tiers based on factor like wealth, income, race, education, and power
Slavery
Condition in which one human being was owned by another
Bonded labor
Happens when people give themselves into slavery as security against a loan or when they inherit a debt from a relative
Indentured servitude
A form of labor in which an individual is under contract to work without slavery to repay a loan
Ideology
cultural beliefs that justify particular social arrangements, including patterns of inequality
Caste system
A class structure that is determined by birth
Apartheid
The implementation and maintenance of a system of legalized racial segregation in which one radical group is deprived of political and civil rights
Estate stratification system
A system of social stratification characterized by control of land by a small elite group and peasants work the land to the benefit of the landowners

Based on both social factor and individual achievement

The movement of a person from one social status to another

The self-understanding of members of a social class

Meritocracy
The notion of of a political system in which economic goods or political power are vested in individual people based on ability and talent, rather than wealth, social class, or race
Divine right of kings
the right of a sovereign to rule as set forth by the theory of government that holds that a monarch receives that right to rule directly from God and not from the people
