Polygamy

Family
A socially recognized group that forms an emotional connection and serves as an economic unit of society
Household
A group of people living together who may not be related to each other but share common living spaces, meals, and bills
Nuclear family
A group of people who are united by ties of partnership and parenthood and consisting of a pair of adults and their socially recognized children
Extended Family
a family that extends beyond the nuclear family of parent and their children to include aunts, uncles, grandparents cousins or other relatives, all living nearby or in the same household
Family of orientation
The family that a person is born into and/or raised within
Family of procreation
The family that we create by getting married and having or adopting children
Marriage
A formalized union between two individuals that typically involves legal, social, and emotional ties
Endogamy
Custom enjoining one to marry within one’s own group
Exogamy
The social norm of mating or marrying outside one’s social group
Incest taboo
the prohibition of sexual relations between immediate relatives, usually between parents and children, and between siblings
System of descent
the rules used to determine an individual’s ancestry as established by blood, marriage, or adoption
Bilinial system
Tracing an individual’s descent through the father’s male line and the mother’s female line
Patrilineal system
A system that determines kinship based on a male lines of relatives
