It should be used to introduce socialist ideas
Webb - inevitability of gradualness (right to vote = socialist leadership)

State must be overthrown to control economy
Marx - histories materialism (whoever has means of production controls society), revolution inevitable ONCs class consciousness has occurred
But some disagree on how this will happen
Luxemburg - worker strikes and the ballot box

It’s flawed and reform is needed.
Fundamentals and social democrats say system must be altered
Crossland - gap between rich and poor is too large

State should harness captialism, allowing people to gain wealth whereas fundamentals would say full removal of capitalism is necessary
Crossland - managed capitalism using taxes to redistribute wealth in a welfare state

Capitalism flawed as it damages society through social class causing (economic) inequality
Marx - current system causes us to be selfish damaging society
Social democrats say- belief in class inequality
Crossland - gap between rich and poor too big (hated grammar schools because of the class divide)
All believe state should promote equality

3rd way - meritocracy
Giddens - competitive individualism
Social democrats - welfare equality (inequality but you can’t fall too low)
Revolutionary - welfare is just a failure to remove capitalism
Marx and luxemburg reject welfare for this reason

It needs to change to benefit society

It has had a negative effect x but it’s how bad this is that’s debated
Social democrats/3rd way - people can still flourish with capitalism so doesn’t need to be overthrown
Webb - we are rational but need state intervention
Crossland - managed capitalism ( don’t require common ownership)
Positive view of human nature - sociable, cooperative, community minded

Naturally sociable but malleable , capitalism makes selfish
Marx - nature modded so capitalism must be overthrown and replaced with common ownership/ collectivist state to allow for best human nature

Soc dem - mixed economy
Crossland - humans competitive and can be guided towards social justice
Giddens - humans aspirational and see advancement, suggesting material motivation may not be a bad thing (capitalism)

All believe in a form of equality because of human nature
Soc dem - (Crossland) we have a natural sense of social justice
3rd way - equality of opportunity
Soc dems and fundamentalists - class bring selfishness (classes need to be equal for best human nature)
Marx - capitalists only benefits ruling class
How do 3rd ways disagree on equality/state and human nature? Evidence?
Place much less emphasis on class divide and how bad it is for human nature
Giddens - avoiding classes (social engineering) would only build resentment, damaging common humanity (human nature)
