People who came to California in 1849 for California Gold Rush
Population growth in California
After the Gold Rush, the miners stayed in California because of the scenery, great land, and job opportunities so the population got very big and they applied for statehood
San Francisco
A boomtown that became populated for its great scenery
Did miners get rich?
Some found gold but lost it during gambling, got it stolen, didn’t even get gold, or got lots of gold but spent it wildly so very few became rich for a long time
How merchants did during gold rush
They had no competition so they could charge whatever they wanted and everyone needed supplies so they got really rich
Mining camp conditions
Nobody had houses and there were no police officers so there was a lot of stealing and crime, people got drunk and became very rowdy, and there was a lot of gambling so people lost everything they had
Vigilantes
People who took the law into their own hands and forced people to follow the law and if a person didn’t, they sometimes killed people
California becomes a state
Many people stayed after the Gold Rush because of the great land and scenery so the population soared and they had enough people to apply for statehood so the Senate said if they didn’t allow slavery, they could become a state
Mormons
People who made the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints who said they were Christian but the Christians didn’t who believed in communism and polygamy so they got many haters so they had to go move to many places and finally settled in Utah
Joseph Smith
A man from upstate New York who said that God spoke to him to make a new branch of Christianity so he made Mormonism and became the leader of the branch
Brigham Young
The second leader of the Mormons who moved them to Utah to get away from anti- Mormon people
Mormon Trail to the west
They went from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois and then to the Great Salt Lake area which became the largest single migration in US history
Deseret
What the Mormons called their city near the Great Salt Lake which later changed its name to Salt Lake City
Utah Territory
The territory the Great Salt Lake area became when the US took control of Utah
