Indian Territory
A territory in present- day Oklahoma where the Native Americans were supposed to live peacefully
Indian Removal Act
An act that relocated the Native Americans to lands west of the Mississippi River and made an Indian Territory in present- day Oklahoma
Cherokee Nation
A Native American tribe that had treaties with Georgia to keep their land but gold was found there and they were forced off their land to walk on the Trail of Tears
“Worcester v. Georgia”
A Supreme Court case in which John Marshall said that Georgia cannot invade Cherokee land because of the treaties made between them
Jackson’s response
He disagreed and said,”John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.” which means that Jackson is ignoring the Supreme Court
General Winfield Scott
A general sent by Andrew Jackson to remove Cherokee and force them to walk to Oklahoma
Trail of Tears
A march that the Cherokee were forced to walk that killed 1/4 of the tribe and went in all kinds of conditions
Black Hawk
The chief of the Sauk and Fox tribes who led them back to Illinois from the reservations to recapture their land because they believed they had been tricked by the federal government but were chased away by federal and state troops
Sauk and Fox
Two Native Americans tribes that were led by Black Hawk and agreed to march but when they got there, they were annoyed with the bad land there so they went back to Illionois to recapture their land but were chased away by the federal and state troops
Seminole
A Native American tribe in Florida that successfully resisted the Americans, joined with runaway slaves, used guerrilla tactics to defeat the Americans, ambushed soldiers led by Major Francis Drake, and ended up keeping their land

The Seminole chief who was captured trying to make treaties with the Americans

An American Major who was ambushed by the Seminole so only a few of his soldiers survived

A massacre in which Major Francis Dade’s soldiers were ambushed so all but a few of his soldiers survived
