Spain gave up their claim with the Adams- Onis Treaty and Russia gave up their claim by announcing they didn’t want any land South of Alaska
Four countries who claimed Oregon country
America based their claim on agreements with Britain, Britain based their claim going back to colonization, Spain based their claim on that they have California, and Russia based their claim on having the area around Alaska
Mountain men
Tough, independent people in the Rocky Mountains who spent their days trapping beaver and some worked alone to sell their fur to the highest bidder and some worked for companies

A mission started by Dr. Marcus Whitman and his wife, Narcissa, that was supposed to convert the Native Americans to Christianity but when new settlers unknowingly brought measles there and killed most Native American children, the Native Americans got really mad and killed the Whitmans and 11 others

Wagons that the pioneers used to transport their household goods West that looked like a sailboat from a distance

A trail the Americans used to get to Oregon that went across the Great Plains and through the South Pass to the Willamette Valley

The Americans increased by 4500 in 5 years while the British stayed at 700
Hardships on the Oregon Trail
The terrain was hard to walk with many mountains, there was a lot of disease and no doctors, there was hunger because people didn’t bring enough food, there were attacks from animals that people didn’t expect, the cold weather was tough on people, and there were Native American attacks that were rare but the people were most scared of them
Manifest Destiny
It literally means “clear fate”. A New York newspaper editor, John O’ Sullivan, said that it was America’s, “Manifest Destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us.” which means that it was America’s clear fate to settle the land all the way to the Pacific Ocean
“Fifty- four Forty or Fight”
The election slogan that the Democrats used in the Election of 1844 to refer to the line of latitude that they believed should be the northern border of the US
Settlement with Britain
The Democrats did not get their plan of “Fifty- four Forty” but did compromise and get 49 degrees latitude
