The 5th president of the United States who was the president during the Era of Good Feelings so everyone loved him
Era of Good Feelings
A happy time in American history in which there were no political differences, there was a lot of patriotism from post war feelings, and the economy was growing rapidly
Why did the Era of Good Feelings end
There was increased sectionalism throughout the country which led to political parties
Sectionalism
When people are only interested in the region of their country and what is good for their region, not the country as a whole
Internal improvements
Things within the country, like roads, which will help the country
John Calhoun
A leading War Hawk who was a senator and spoke for the South in most political matters in the Senate so he spoke for states’ rights and no tariffs
Daniel Webster
A speaker for the North in the House of Representatives who was known for being a great orator and heavily spoke for the Tariff of 1816
Henry Clay
The Speaker of the House who spoke for the West and was known for his compromises
Missouri Compromise
A compromise made by Henry Clay that stated that Missouri would be a slave state, Maine would pull out of Massachusetts and be a free state, and any new state formed in the Louisiana Territory above the 36’30 parallel would be free, and any state under that line would be a slave state
American System
An idea in government made by Henry Clay that was supposed to help everyone but was not passed that had a protective tariff, internal improvements, and a national bank that would all be funded by the tariff
McCulloch v. Maryland
A Supreme Court case in which Maryland tried to tax the national bank, which was in Maryland but they couldn’t because a state cannot tax a federal institution
Gibbons v. Ogden
A Supreme Court case in which Aaron Ogden said that Thomas Gibbons could not run his steamboat company in New York because that was Ogden’s land but John Marshall said that he can do business wherever he wants because he has a federal license and Ogden only had a New York license
Rush- Bagot Treaty
A treaty with Great Britain that limited the number of naval vessels on the Great Lakes and called for the removal of weapons on the Northern border
Convention of 1818
A treaty with Great Britain that officially set the border between Canada and America, made both countries demilitarize the border, and the US got the right to settle in the Oregon Territory
Andrew Jackson
An American general who invaded East Florida and was sent to stop Seminole, an Native American tribe, raids but instead took control of two Spanish forts which he should have been punished for
