ascribed social status
status that one is born into- based on divisions of people into unequally ranked groups
redistribution
a socially high ranking individual may redistribute their wealth- Ranked societies redistributive economies, accruing prestidge to increase status, potlatch, conspicuous gifting
potlatch ceremony
potlatch, conspicuous gifting ex: indigeounous peoples of the NW (Boas’ observation of Kwakiutl potlatches) did always share things equally people sat based on rank.
achieved social status
A person or groups status earned by themselves.
meritocracy
each person rises on their own merits (work ethic, schooling etc.) individual has total control of their situation.

bourgeoisie and proletariat- bourgeoisie cotrol of the means of production (owners of the factories, tools, land, finances etc.) laborers (proletariat only owns its ability to work/toil) strikes are effective because of reliance on laborers.

Bourdieu
studied the french educational system to understand relationships among class culture power and taste, found that the education system reproduced exisitng system of stratification rather than offer an equal oppourtnity for social mobility.

habitus
(home)- your sociocultural environment of beliefs, values, tastes, etc that enculturates you(since you were a child) to function within your class; your internalized predispositions and shared self perceptions
Mullings
intersectionality among class, race, gender, -study class in relation to other things

connected systems of power that produce a combined effect on people’s lives

Strawberry pickers- migrant farm workers- workers were trying to get medical care- structural issues and barriers- no translation, healthcare, money, need to work to stay alive and work instead of curing their injuries
socially stratified suffering (FFBB)
Suffering is greater at the bottom of the hierarchy. Ex: Holmes study of the tolls work has on the body
individual vs structural understandings of poverty
Poverty blamed on individual behavior instead of looking at structural barriers that keep people poor. Poverty is not a reflection of work ethic.
