Nation-state

situational negotiation of identity
an individuals self identification with a particular group that can shift according to social location. Ex: among friends in American may say you are puerto rican, going abroad say you are American.
diaspora/ethnicity across borders
A group of people who share culture but live in different places
ethnicity as wedge
tool of wealth and power by Belgian colonial government led to self perpetuating ethnic boundary marking between tutsi and Hutus and violence against the former colonial appointees (tutsi people) by majority Hutu people.
