the anthropological definition, as a cultural construct
racialization
The process of categorizing, differentiating and attributing a particular racial character to a person or group.
racism
structural racism(laws and policies)
racial stratification
Unequal access to resources or opportunities based on ones race.
racial ideology
ideological racism(creation of ideologies about race- hierarchies in a specific culture)
structural vs individual racism
Structural racism- policies that further discrimination effecting peoples opportunities and resources. Individual being discriminated against. Ex: george floyd (individual) police violence (structural)
hypodescent
-the rule of hypo descent- no longer a legal term but still has cultural salience
-used historically to create racial classifications of the children of mixed percentage
-the “one drop” rule labeled a child as a member of the subordinate position in a racial hierarchy
-note:specific to the us and is history
-each culture has its own ways of classifying people
eugenics
Prevented races from mixing. Idea that one race is superior then other, keep purity. Justified policies like bans on interracial marriages, holocaust, sterilization and segregation.

white privilege
“an invisible package of unearned assets” (Peggy McIntosh) - advantages that are passed down and unquestioned - brings ideas of meritocracy into question
