What are the 2 forms of Conformity?

A

PUBLIC COMPLIANCE (Normative)

-Sometimes we will conform with group beliefs and behaviour, even when those beliefs or behaviour are clearly wrong

Ex. Asch Experiment (Matching the length of lines)

PRIVATE ACCEPTANCE (Informational)

-Our perception of ambiguous circumstances (circumstances with many number of possibilities), can be affected by the beliefs and behaviours of group members

DIFFUSION of RESPONSIBILITY

In time of uncertainty and crisis, we look to people for cues on what to do, while they’re doing the same. So that leads to an overall inaction.
