Intelligence - Misuse of Intel Tests Flashcards
Define Selective Breeding
When traits are heritable, organisms with desirable traits can be bred together to produce offspring that also share those traits.
Elaborate on Eugenics
Intelligence is heritable (r = 0.50)
POSITIVE EUGENICS
- People with noteworthy characteristics (poets, athletes, scientists) should be encouraged to reproduce
- Its called POSITIVE EUGENICS bc it encourages certain people to reproduce
NEGATIVE EUGENICS
- People that society/government does not deem fit to reproduce should be sterilized
- Negative Eugenics restricts opportunities for reproduction
Eugenics in Practice
WWII Germany: It was illegal for women who were “genetically fit” to get abortions
1934 Sweden: Sterilized 60,000 deviant and mentally ill individuals
Alberta Sterilization Act
Passed in 1928
WWI had huge economic and social impact across the world
The dominant theory suggested that war was mainly caused by countries needing more land to accommodate growing populations
OBSERVATIONS
Mentally and social deficient and those who lived in poverty reproduced at a higher rate than the ideal individuals
They are a large burden to society, and the main source of violent crime
IMPLICATION
Sterilizing the poor, feeble-minded, and socially deficient is a preventative measure of war
ISSUES
IQ tests were not always accurate
Immigration and testing
THE ASA was terminated in 1972
