Human Development - Motor Development Flashcards
Natural Reflexes
On birth, infants are not capable of much.
They do display a few prominent reflective behaviours.
Ex. If you touch the cheek, they will lean their head towards the finger to suck (Rooting reflex)
When the fall they spread their arms (Moro static reflex)
They hold your finger tightly (Grasp reflex)
Walking Stages
Occurs around 1 year of age, and it comes before orderly development of motor skills
6 months: Sitting upright
9 months: crawling
11 months: Standing
12 months: cruising (While holding onto something)
13 months: walking without assistance
18-24 months: running
Is walking a trait were born with?
One theory suggests that walking is a preprogrammed behaviour once the child gains the strength to do so
Which claims that walking is instinctual behaviour (like sucking and grasping reflexes)
What is swaddling?
When they tightly wrap babies so they cry less and sleep better, but this leads to later development of walking
Children in water
When you partially put a baby in a pool, they will start treading. Which indicates that they possess some propensities towards walking before actually walking
Babies around 4 months will begin treading in water
Do children have the same development for walking?
No, infants in new guinea often do not learn to crawl before learning to walk. This suggests that environmental factors play a role in the development of walking
Patterns of Motor Development
Tends to follow CEPHALOCAUDAL (top to bottom)
And PROXIMODISTAL (Inside to outside) progression
