Schizophrenia is categorized as a psychotic disorder
Psychotic disorders involve PSYCHOSIS (a break from reality)
Symptoms of Schizophrenia
distorted perception (hallucination) or thinking (delusions), blunted emotional range, disorganization of behaviour
Schizophrenia Auditory
about 65% of those w schizophrenia report hearing voices
Schizophrenics experiencing auditory hallucination have increased activity in the BROCAS AREA in the brain
BROAS AREA is important for forming syntactically correct speech
Schizophrenia Delusions
Another common symptom is beliefs, often unusual.
Extravagant beliefs of conspiracy, without evidence.
Schizophrenia Speech
Another symptom sometimes seen is a disorganization of speech or thought
Will rapidly shift between different topics within speech that have minimal or no relation
Disorganization of Behaviour
Sometimes display abnormal behaviour or motor disturbances.
This includes public masturbation, neglect ones appearance, unusual loudness of voice
And sometimes CATONIA (They will hold a position for hours)
Schizophrenia Genetics
Concordance between twins is 48%, compared to frat. twins 17%
Environment
Individuals with an unstable life or if extreme conflict is present, are morel likely to develop schizophrenia
Prenatal Development
In cases where one identical twin does NOT develop schizophrenia, the one without is the SECOND born and WEIGHTS LESS
