Social Practical Flashcards
aim
whether there is a gender difference in ppts self-reported levels of obedience
alternative hypothesis
females will display significantly higher levels of self-reported obedience (on a scale of 1-10) compared to males
null hypothesis
there will be no significant difference between self-reported levels of obedience (on a scale of 1-10) of females and males, any differences are due to chance
independent variable
gender- whether the ppt is male or female
dependent variable
self-reported levels of obedience on a scale of 1-10
measures of control
standardised instructions written on questionnaire, same location, all ppts took part at the same time of day
materials
consent form, questionnaire, debrief form, pen
research method
questionnaire
question types
5 closed and 5 open questions
example of closed q
‘how obedient are you on a scale of 1-10?’
example of open q
‘how obedient are you? please explain your answer’
data types
closed q’s- quantitative
open q- qualitative
strength of quantitative data
analysed using measures of central tendency and is objective
weaknesses of quantitative data
may restrict ppts responses and a numerical form does not reflect thoughts and opinions
strengths of qualitative data
provides in-depth data that doesn’t restrict ppts thoughts
weaknesses of qualitative data
researcher may interpret the data with a subjective bias and statistical tests cannot be conducted
participants
20 sixth form students from Valley park school aged 16-18
sampling method
opportunity in the common room
ethical issues considered
consent form
debrief
given right to withdraw
qualitative results
in female responses, there was a common theme of discussing rebellion and nervousness regarding being given orders
quantitative results
calculated measures of central tendency (mean, median and mode) and measures of dispersion (range and standard deviation)
conclusion
females have higher levels of self-rated obedience compared to males
which hypothesis is accepted
we can accept our alternative hypothesis, we can reject our null hypothesis
problems that occurred and how to overcome them
- the research used psychology students- demand characteristics. can be overcome by going into a private study while psychology lessons are on
- participants were not supervised when doing their questionnaire, meaning they could copy each other’s answers. to overcome make sure that they are done in a controlled environment
how can we extend the research
use a sample of older ppts to see if there are any differences in obedience levels amongst females and males
