social fears - changing atitudes towards imigration in the 1920's Flashcards
KU - why were americans ‘scared’ of imigrants?
they stood out because they looked so different
often they were malnurished and thin - some even had disabilities due to poor diet and americans were not acustomed to the level of poverty being endured within these countries
KU - why else did imigrants tend to look ‘out of place’?
they continued to speak their native languages and adhear to their cultural dress etc
A - therefor social fears were the main reason for changing atitudes towards imigration in the 20’s because..
imigrants were (wrongly) blamed for overcrowding neighborhoods and ‘reducing them to a ghetto’.
this furthered social fears because crime rates were often higher in these areas and imigrants blamed for this
A+ - however, social fears were not the main reason for changing atitudes towards imigration in the 20’s because..
most imigrants who were arrested, were for crimes of poverty such as homlessness or petty theft which didnt actually make them much of a threat at all. (they stole basic nesesitys i.e small amounts of food, clothing and money)
E - upon evaluation, social fears did lead to changing atitudes towards imigration in the 20’s however..
this was not as important as racism and prejudice
E - what was the 100% American Movement
formed from racist and prejudicial beliefs - followers tuelly believed imigrants were a danger to american life
they wrote articles and books aswell as lecturing in uni’s and preaching in churches
