popular prejudice - obsticals to civil rights up to 1941 Flashcards
KU - what happened as a result of WW1?
WW1 resulted in expanding industry and so many black people made the decision to move from the South to the North in what became known as ‘THE GREAT MIGRATION’
KU - durring the great migration how many black citizens moved and what were the consiquences
6 million black citizens moved during the great migration
consiquently:
- this greatly changed the make-up of the northern population
- tensions rose due to competition for jobs and housing
Therefor popular prejudice was the main obstical proventing the achievment of civil rights up to 1941 because…
black people were stuck in low paid jobs and consiquently could only aford poor quality housing. Landlords converted houses into ‘rooming houses’ so that people could rent smaller ‘units’ at cheaper prices
properties soon fell into dispare
However, popular prejudice was not the main obsticle proventing the achievment of civil rights up to 1941 because…
the behavure demonstrated in the North would have been simmilar whereever people migrated, ultimatly it was the fault of the federal government who failed to confront unfair treatment
ulternative political opinion may have changed public opinion
upon evaluation legal impediments were still a greater obstical than popular prejudice because..
it was jim crow laws that ultimatly forced americans out of southern states which then led to growth of gettos in the north due to black citizens being in the exact same situation (being quite poor, not having a job and migrating to a new state)
