devisions within the black comunity - obsticals to civil rights up to 1941 Flashcards
KU - when was the NAACP formed? what was its aim? who was it made up of?
NAACP formed in 1909 and aimed to improved education for black people so that they could fight legally against descrimination
the organisation was dominated by well of black people who failed to gain the support of poorer members of the comunity
KU - when was the UNIA formed and who was it founded by? what was its membership and aim?
Founded by Marcus Garvey in 1914 and had membership of 6 million by 1923.
his aim was to create a ‘new negro’ who was proud of his colour, race and heritage and who was prepped to resist white mistreatment
A - Therefor devisions within the black comunity were the main obstical proventing the achievment of civil rights up to 1941 because..
orginisations such as the UNIA believed in a militaristic atitude towards gaining civil rights and this caused devisions as some agreed violence/militance was the only way but others firmly believed agression would be detrimental towards any possible progress.
A+ - however, devisions within the black comunity were not the main obsticle in the way of achieving civil rights up to 1941 because..
the entire comunity were ultimatly striving and drawing atention towards the same shared goal. being wealthy or poor, violent or non-violent didnt really have an impact, many states were simply reluctant to allow black people basic rights
E - Upon evaluation, whilst devisions within the black comunity were an issue this was not as significant as legal impediments which ultimatly meant..
black people didnt have the right to vote and without this it would be incredibly difficult to improve there circumstances
The civil rights act 1866 for example was a DEJURE meaningit apreared to be in law but was not actually in practice
