legal impediments - obsticles to civil rights up to 1941 Flashcards
KU - what did legal impediments become known as? what did they do? give examples?
they became known as Jim Crow Laws and they segregated black and white people in every walk of life ultimatly making them second class citizens
examples: seperate schools, public toilets and drinking fountains - ban on mixed marraiges etc
KU - what was notable about segrigation and what impact did this have?
facilities for black people were much inferior to the facilities provided for white people. This had a negative impact of black people when it came to schooling for example
A - therefor legal impediments were an important obsticle in the way of the achivment of civil rights because…
although the civil rights act 1866 passed through congress stating black americans would be given citizenship and to deny them this based on the colour of their skin would be unlawful, due to state laws it was very dificult (particularly in the south) to pass this.
A+ - however legal impediments were not the most important obsticle because..
whilst they were a huge issue in the south they were slightly less of an issue in the north whereas popular prejudice surroundingblack people was apparant all throughout America
E - legal impediments can be considered an incredibly significant obsticle in the way of black people achieveing civil rights because..
some of the greatest polotitions generally refused to improve the impact of legal impediments - In 1916 president wilson said ‘segregation is not humiliating and is a benefit for you black gentelmen’.
