Social Explanation For Schizophrenia - Dysfunctional Family Flashcards
Double bind theory
Bateson - families communicate with schizo children in a non clear way that is destructive.
-e.g. mother tells son she love him but in an aggressive tone
Becomes unable to respond logically to others - suggest schizo Chad by family
Double bind theory - paralanguage
Sometimes parent unaware they are using double bind.
-Dad ask son how was school, dad ignores response leaving child confused:
A)If they respond to dad, they get met with lack of care
B)If they ignore dad, they will be punished
How double bind lead to symptoms of schizophrenia
If believe all conversation have harmful meaning = delusions of prosecution - could lead to avolition, decrease care in surrounding or interact with others
Causing symptoms to be relief instead of something bad
Berger - interview schizo, higher recall of double bind from mother than non-schizophrenic control
Mischler + Waxler- mother talk to schizo children more aloof + unresponsive. Normal to normal children - schizo cause double bind? No mention of double bind but communication is different
Expressed emotions (EE)
The different ways families treat schizo members. Can either cause someone to maintain schizophrenia or help to prevent symptoms.
High EE
If relative have high EE more likely to cause schizophrenic to relapsed:
Critical comment - negative statement for schizo ‘so lazy’ those who low EE do acknowledge illness cause lack of ability
Hostility - showing usually non-verbal negative actions. (Shouting, ignoring) - anger or rejection
Emotional over involvement - excessive self sacrifice or protective over schizo children, due to guilt for children illness
-not let them play with others, spend majority of time on them
Low EE
Less likely to cause relapse:
Warmth: nice vocal messages, actions + empathy
-give positive comment + body language
Positive regard: number of times caregiver give statements showing support or appreciation to schizo children (lots of gifts+ actions, kiss)
EE study
Kavanagh- schizo in high EE family 4 times likely to relapse than low EE family
Brown - 156 men with schizo after discharged from hospital
-those discharge to family or wives home more likely to relapse than those with lodging or with siblings
-interview with parent + wives = EE + likelihood of relapse linked
Vaugh + Leff - 53% of schizo with high EE relative relapse in 9 months, 12% with low EE relative relapse did
Evaluation - Double bind - subjective
Double bind can be interpreted different
-Ringuette + Kennedy - expert in DB + non expert. Same ability in recognising double bind in letter from nurse or family
-shows people who encounter double a lot still make mistake in recognising DB
-decrease reliability as what some shcizo think it’s double bind not to others
EE - backed by research
Brown - those live with house of high EE with family or wives more often replase than with sibling or self
Kavanagh - schizo in high EE family 4 time more likely to relapse than low EE
-shows the reliability of of the EE theory as researches produces similar data, can be used in therapies of schizophrenia
EE - causal relationship
Is high EE causes schizo it schizo cause people to behave in a high Ee way
-Or third variable such as Genin Quadriplets
-Where gene is a factor that cause schzio in children and adult behave negative way, or environment such as poverty causes high stress environment
-Without EE having a solid cause further research may be more difficult to find if using EE as explanation (look work sheet for research that says this)
Overal - usefulness
This approach allow people to understand importance of family
-future, family may be incorporated with therapies (lecture or info to better understand schizo)
-if shcizo more aware of dysfunctional family, can use growing technology such as social to talk with people about problems or find methods for stress relief - understand what they encounter is not normal
