Define Social Determinants of Health
- Influence the health of populations… Either prevent us from getting sick or help us get better when we are sick!
Gain insights into how social determinants such as income, housing, education, gender, race impact a person’s risk of acquiring infectious diseases
- Income… In low income countries/regions… Infectious disease was main killer! Not non-infectious diseases. Where as low-middle and up the main killer is Non-infectious diseases

Are poor health and homelessness linked?
YES! Very closely!
How can we improve health outcomes?
Can’t just address physical health! Need to look at a population’s social health too!
Health Outcomes?
Life expectancy, morbidity, mortality, health care expenditure, health status, and disability.
Social Gradient of health
Richest have access to social and economic resources and have control over their circumstances. They live longer and are healthier than everyone else.
Health Inequality
Differences in the health status of individuals and populations that are unavoidable. Reasons for these differences range from biology and genetics to broad social and economic factors
Health Inequity
Differences in health status of individuals and groups that are avoidable and/or unjust! Health inequalities arise form inequalities within and between societies
Do Inuit have high or low rate of TB?
HIGH! Due to overcrowding in housing and limited access to healthcare!
