What is a social norm
Refers to people’s behaviour influenced by perception of how other members of social group behave. Unwritten rules by which social groups are expected to behave.
What is a cultural norm
Behaviour patterns of specific groups due to cultural upbringing, ethnic affiliation, country of origin or religious practices. Usually determined by family.
Ways social and cultural norms are transmitted
Explicitly- written/declared rules rules e.g dress code on invitation
Implied- unwritten/ not declared e.g body language, disapproving glare
Observed- required behaviour by others e.g drinking at party
Expectation- family, work, school expectations in order to fit in and be successful
What promotes social and cultural norms

What does the social cognitive theory suggest
That the interaction between an individual and their surrounding environment can influence the way the behave

- Personal determinants: thoughts/ beliefs effect behaviour
- Behavioural determinants: health behaviour influenced by environment and personal determinants
- Environmental determinants: location, culture, peers, family, social setting influencing bahviour
