What questions would an epidemiologist ask?
- Which individuals have experienced event
- When did they experience the event
- Where did they experience the event
- What environmental factors are associated with this event
Three parts of the epidemiological triangle
- HOST
- ENVIRONMENT
- AGENT
Mortality
Death
Infant mortality
Death of children and babies
Morbidity
Sickness or illness
Incidence of disease
Number of cases in specific population (gives indication risk of individual contractions disease)
Prevalence of disease
Overall number of cases of a certain disease or condition in specific place or time period (gives indication of overall size of problem/ how widespread)
Burden of disease
Health loss to society due to disease or injury that remains AFTER TREATMENT
What does NHPAs stand for
National Health Priority Areas
Name three NHPAs
- Cancer control
- Diabetes
- Mental health
What is a chronic disease
-illness that is prolonged in duration, and is rearely cured completely. The disease can either not be cured at all or very slow to heal
