Community development
Aims to empower individuals and groups with the skills they need to advocate on their own behalf to improve their lives and provide communities with access to resources
Define a community
A network of people often living in a defined geographical location who share common culture, values and norms that have developed over a period of time
What are the 6 principles of community development
- sustainability
- diversity
- human rights
- addressing disadvantage
- value local knowledge
- social justice
What is sustainability?
A way to configure communities and human activity so that society, it’s members and it’s economy meets its needs and potential while acting to maintain this in the long term
What is diversity?
The quality of being different, communities need to respect that all individuals are different and must attempt to cater for all (gender, age, ethnicity, culture)
What are human rights?
The basic rights and freedoms all humans are entitled to and should expect, e.g freedom of speech
What is addressing disadvantage?
Aim of governments to reduce poverty and disadvantage
What is value local knowledge
Taking advantage of local knowledge, skills and resources of the community
What is social justice
Aim to bring equality among those who live in the community
