Contemporary Technology Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of contemporary technology
- organ and tissue donation
- in-vitro fertilisation (IVF)
- stem cells
- genetically modified foods
What is organ tissue donation
When you donate your skin tissue and organs voluntarily to a recipient
What are the two types of organ and tissue donation
- live transplant (liver transplant)
- brain death
When is live transplant (liver transplant) needed
Liver transplant is needed when a person has either acute or chronic liver failure.
What is brain death
When patient dies suitable donors as they can be sustained using life support to keep organs alive
What does IVF stand for
In-vitro fertilisation
What is ivf
A method of assisted reproduction
What happens during ivf
Egg and sperm are combined and fertilised in vitro or test tube to become embryos
Embryos then implanted into womans uterus where it will grow/mature
What are the steps involved in IVF (scfe)
- stimulating the ovaries
- collecting the eggs
- fertilisation
- embryo transfer
When is IVF used
Used for couples who are unable to conceive
Used to create embryos with specific qualities
Ethical considerations of IVF
- defining initiation of life ethically
- turning children into commodities
- should IVF be offered to older women
Types of stem cells
- Embryonic stem cells/ pluripotent stem cells
- Adult stem cells/ tissue specific stem cells/ multi potent stem cells
What is embryonic/ pluripotent stem cells
These cells can become any kind of tissue in the body
What is adult/tissue specific/ multipotent stem cells
They are specific to a tissue but are multipotent as they have many different varieties
Benefits of genetically modified foods
- better quality food
- greater shelf life
- medical benefits(edible vaccines)
