social booklet 1 conformity Flashcards
name the 3 types of conformity
internalisation identification and compliance
define conformity
where we change behaviour in response to real of false influential pressure set by the majority
define obedience
form of social influence where you follow a direct order from an authority figure
what study supports conformity
aschs line test cards
what did asch find in the original study
the avg rate of conformity was 32%
74% conformed atleast once and 26% didnt ever
what is compliance
where you agree in public to go along w others
DISAGREE IN PRIVATE
whats identification
where you think about the opinion and agree with them in public however disagree with some parts in private
whats internalisation
where you PUBLICALLY AND PRIVATELY AGREE
what are the 2 explanations for conformity
informational social influence and normative social influence
when would you be informationally socially influenced
when youre unsure and you just want to go along wiht others to get the answer right
what variables affect conformity
group size
unanimity
task difficulty
who investigated variables affecting conformity
Asch
how did asch investigate group size
he repeated the experiment and wanted to know wether the size of the group would be more important than the agreement of the group
what did asch find when he changed group sizes
found little conformity with 1 or 2 confederates however with 3 confederates conformity to the wrong answer rose to 32%
outline and explain aschs experiment into task difficulty
he repeated the original experiment but made the line lengths close together, making the answer less obvious
he found that conformity increased under these circumstances
what did zimbardo investigate
conformity into social roles
what was zimbardos procedure
he found volunteers and selected those deemed emotionally stable
he randomly assigned them roles of guard and prisoner
the prisoners were arrested in their homes and delivered to the fake prison and issued a uniform number
the prisoners names were never used, just their numbers
what did zimbardo find
he found after the 6 days that the prisoners began to rebel after day 2 due to harsh treatment and concluded that social roles are taken subconsciously and very easily
Define normative social influence
when we follow behaviour thats deemed as ‘normal’ based on the desire to be liked
Define the informational explanation for social influence
when we are influenced based on the desire to be correct.
What did Asch conclude from his original study
NSI affected results significantly shown by the 74% conformity whilst in public compared to mistakes 10% of the time in private
AO3:What does Aschs study lack
ecological validity and mundane realism:
Only American males as participants meaning results cannot be generalised to the general public
AO3:Evaluate Aschs original study
Low EV
deception- ethics
artificial situation
Outline zimbardos study
22 American volunteers were randomly selected into social roles- prisoner or guard
guards were given instructions to not call the inmates by their names instead their allocated numbers
also allowed to have complete control over their entire lives whilst in the Stanford university basement prisoners also had a daily routine that they had to stick to within the 6 days they stayed within these social roles.
What did Zimbardo conclude from his prison study
Good people in a bad place will change behaviours.
Guards conformed to their roles
AO3: Evaluate Zimbardo’s prison experiment
+control of participants-only mentally stable
- Androcentric- 24 white American participants
- Lacks realism- in a uni basement aswell as fake roles however maybe he prison felt real to participants
-individual differences- some may go to further extremities to play their role than others.
