Resiliency theory
the ability to exhibit a healthy response when faced with adversity
Risk Factors:
1. lack of health insurance
2. absence of family provider
3. incomplete immunizations
Protective Factors:
1. child can communicate needs
2. family member present
3. comprehensive health insurance
Poverty
- unmet health need, difficulty in school, stunted growth, lead poisoning, risk for drugs/alcohol/teen pregnancy
- food insecurity, unsafe housing, homeless
Adverse Childhood Experiences
- stress and traumatic social events
- abuse, neglect, alcohol, drugs in the home, incarcerated parent, divorce
- increased risk of stress related disease- CVA,HTN, MI, mental health
Abuse and Neglect
THE INJURY IS SUPPOSED TO MATCH THE STORY
1. physical or emotional abuse/neglect
2. sexual abuse ( usually chronic )
3. nurses are mandated reporters (report the behavior your seeing)
4. alternative therapy - cupping, coining, etc.
Environmental Influences
- contaminants (exhaust)
- poisoning ( cleaning products, call poison control 1st)
- foreign body ingestion
violence
- school communities
- bullying
- incarceration
- hazing
- domestic and dating violence
Lifestyle activities
- tobacco use- avg. age to try is 9-14 years old
- 70% of HS seniors have tried alcohol
- marijuana, chemical inhalants, methylphenidate, OTC meds
- inactivity and sedentary behavior
- body art
- sexual orientation
Lead poisoning
Found in paint in the home, contaminated soil, lead pipes, dishes
Affects the:
1. Neurologic = behavior problems, lower IQ, hearing loss, learning disabilities
2. Renal = kidney damage
3. Hematologic = anemia
