What is a steryotype?
An overgeneralized belief about a whole group of something/somone
- about an individual based on their membership of a group
- FORMS THE BASIS FOR OUR PREJUDICE
They influence how we interpret behavior and are can be good/bad
How do stereotypes relate to prejudice>
Ex/
If we rate “grandparents” high on warmth and low on competence, we get
PITY
If we rate the “homeless” low on warmth and low on competence, we get
DEROGATION
If we rate an Asian person low on warmth and high on competence, we get
THREAT
What is prejudice?
- Negative attitude towards someone/a group of people because they are a member of a group
What is discrimination?
- Negative behaviour towards a person because they are a member of a specific group
What is ingroup favoratism?
when we’re more willing to lie to help an ingroup member
More likely to help an ingroup member than an outgroup member
What maintains our stereotypes/prejudices?
Self-Fulfilling prophecies!
Ex/ Someone tells you that the bank is going bankrupt. So obviously, you take our your money. Since everyone does the same, the bank runs out of money and goes bankrupt.
If nobody did anything, the bank would’ve been fine
What is confirmation biases?
Paying attention to information that confirms your beliefs
What are the three main etiologies of psychological disorders?
Demonology:
Therapies included- genital mutilation, beatings, removal of teeth, removal of body parts, animal blood transfusion, leeches, etc.
Supernatural explanations:
- Babylonians, chinese, egyptians, greek
- Wrath of god for some transgression
- 1700’s moved to asylums away from others
Biological Perspectives:
- Hippocrates tried to classify mental disorders in terms of imbalances in the humors
- today, medical model, psychological disorders have biological causes
What are the biological causes of psychological disorders?
- genetics
- imbalances in neurotransmitters
- brain abnormalities (size/function)
What is a psychological disorder?
Harmful dysfunction:
- We have internal mechanisms (fear, anger, sadness) that are adaptive and serve to keep us alive
- When these internal mechanisms break down - dysfunction
- When the dysfunction leads to negative consequences - psychological disorder!
What is the diathesis-stress model?
Diathesis: Genes / brain structure / early learning / thinking style
Stress: abuse / illness / traumatic event / change in situation
